Walt Whitman Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819, in the West Hills of swear Island, New York. His mother, Louisa Van Velsor, a Dutch Quaker, whom he adored, was except literate. She never read his poetry, but gave him unconditional love. His father was an Englishman, and a carpenter who built houses, and a stern disciplinarian.
