Eric Schlosser

Halleigh Benner Dr. Wiley English 701 Section 21? Contaminated Meat Every Step Of The Way Eric Schlosser’s book Fast Food Nation, Michael Moss’ article The Burger That Shattered Her Life and the documentary Food Inc. all come together to inform people on the facts about the food industry’s contamination issue. The food industry has many slaughterhouses and meat packing industries in the United States. People never think about where there meat has come from, how it is prepared, stored, or made. Unfortunately, the sanitation of our meat from where it starts to when we eat it is appalling. Many farms now raise livestock in mass groups in dirty environments, they gather into unsanitary slaughterhouses to be killed with unsanitary utensils, methods, and machinery, the meat gets combined with other meat in filthy meat packing industries, and is then packed away for us to eat. Farms should raise cows how they used to be raised, consumers should make healthier and wiser d ecisions on their choices of meat, people need to demand better food safety standards by re-introducing Kevin’s law.The industry doesn’t want you to know the truth about what you are eating, because if you knew then you might not want to eat it, but now the truth is revealed. Our farm animals such as chickens and cattle are not raised how they used to be raised. In the documentary Food Inc. many farmers would not let the camera crew inside the chicken houses, but one woman that was interviewed did. Carole Morison said, â€Å"I understand why farmers do not want to talk because the big companies that they are controlled by can cut pay. Companies control everything about what the farmers do but Carole also stated, â€Å"It is not right what is going on and I made up my mind that I am going to say what I want to say, it doesn’t matter anymore something has to be said. † The documentary showed that her chicken house was full of dust and feces everywhere. The mass amount of chickens cooped up close together couldn’t escape from the unsanitary environment. Many chicken farms are exactly like her’s. Carole said, â€Å"This isn’t farming anymore, it is mass production. The spread of disease is more likely within these mass production chickens because Carole informed us, â€Å"Antibiotics are put into the feed, but the bacteria builds up a resistance and the antibiotics don’t work anymore. † Cattle are not any different than the chickens. The documentary Food Inc. showed viewers that feedlots contain hundreds of cows that stand ankle deep in their own manure all day long. If one cow has a disease such as, E. coli then the others will have a higher risk of getting the disease as well. The unhealthy sanitation of our food even begins when the cows and chickens are alive in their environment that they are being raised. The environment of slaughterhouses where the livestock is killed is horrific and disgusting . To hide these sickening scenes, most slaughterhouses are simple buildings with no windows to see inside. In the book Fast Food Nation, the author Eric Schlosser put on knee high boots because his host from the slaughterhouse said, â€Å"Tuck your pants into the boots, we’ll be walking through some blood† (Pg. 169). Walking through deep puddles of blood is unhygienic. If one cow’s blood is infected and is then mixed with other blood that is gathered into puddles on the ground; workers have to walk through the puddles and it can contaminate machines, utensils, or other meat that is being worked on by the puddles being splattered. Bacteria grows and spreads in moist and humid conditions. Eric Schlosser states, â€Å"The kill floor is hot and humid. It stinks of manure. Cattle have a body temperature of about 101 degrees, and there are a lot of them in the room† (Pg. 170). Bacteria thrive in these places and can be harmful to us in the long run. The process of how our meat is made is unhealthy. The article The Burger That Shattered Her Life by Michael Moss stated, â€Å"Slaughterhouses have the potential for contamination every step of the way† (Pg. 3). It all begins with the removal of the hide from the cows. Food Inc. the documentary brought up a great issue that shows the viewers that when cows come to these slaughterhouses, their hides are caked with manure. To begin, hides must be removed carefully to keep the manure off of the meat but with the commotion and the speed of the slaughterhouse process, this causes high risks of the meat being contaminated with feces.Workers and inspectors from the article The Burger That Shattered Her Life say, â€Å"Much can go wrong, workers slicing away the hide can inadvertently spread feces to the meat, and large clamps that hold the hide during processing sometimes slip and smear the meat with feces† (Pg. 3). Next before transferred to the meat packing part is the gutting station, where the intestines are removed. Eric Schlosser from Fast Food Nation said, â€Å"I see: a man reach inside a cattle and pull out their kidneys with his bare hands† (Pg. 170).After a person reads this statement from Eric Schlosser, it will make people wonder if he washed his hands before he put them back into another cattle. More than likely the worker didn’t because of the speed that the process is going. These careless actions that can be prevented can spread E. coli or other diseases to meats that could cause an entire factory to contain it because of the mixing of meat in the meat packing process. Trimmings in the meat packing industry get mixed with other meat from different slaughterhouses within the United States. For example in the article The Burger That Shattered Her Life, â€Å"Ms. Smith’s patty contained trimmings from a slaughterhouse in Uruguay† (Pg. 4). Mixing meats from different slaughterhouses is not a good idea, because their regulation s could be completely different, especially a slaughterhouse from a different country. Grinding contaminated meat can leave diseases on the machine and spread to other mixed meats that are being mixed in the same grinder. Not mixing meats and sanitizing machines and utensils, every slaughterhouse’s meat can become Grade A.Cattle and other farm animals such as, chickens and pigs should be raised traditionally, in a grass pasture with enough room for them to run around and not having to stand in their own manure. A farmer in the film Food Inc. agreed, â€Å"Having cows in a pasture; they eat and fertilize the grass, the cycle is better for the environment and for them. † The healthier the animals begin their life the more likely; their meat for us to eat will be healthier and not contaminated. The only problem with this solution is that people in this world today are more worried about money and how much they can receive. The more cattle and chickens farmers can raise in the shortest amount of time is better for them and the company, that they are controlled by. Many mass production farmers do not worry about their consumer’s health because it is sometimes seen as the consumer’s own responsibility. Consumers have the ability to choose which meat they want to buy depending on where the meat has come from. They can choose meat that was produced locally or they can read labels to trace back to a preferred and trusted factory and or company. Consumers could also buy their own cow of their choosing and have it butchered for their selves personally. However, many people do not have the time to go into detail to find out where their meat has come from, especially many do not have the money to buy their own cow and have it butchered. Another solution is to reintroduce Kevin’s law for E. coli contamination. The people have the ability notify the congress to enforce food safety standards and re-introduce Kevin’s law. According to th e documentary Food Incorporated, â€Å"Kevin’s law would give back to the USDA the power to shut down plants that repeatedly produce contaminated meat. For Kevin’s law the government is trying to fix this problem with expert inspectors but it will take a while for these experts to be hired and the process to expand everywhere in the United States. Therefore, meat contamination and geting rid of unsanitary utensils, methods, and machinery will decrease at a slow rate.In addition, in the documentary of Food Inc. it was stated, â€Å"People that ridicule the food industry can be charged because the food industry has different protections than other industries do. For example, Oprah Winfrey was sued by a Texas cattleman for demeaning a food product and for the loss of profit. Mass amounts of people need to stand up to this unfair â€Å"protection† over the food industry. One person cannot do it; many have to create a movement. Enhancing food safety programs will b enefit our lives. In conclusion, our future’s health is ultimately at stake and people need to do something to change it. The sanitation of our meat starts from the environment that the livestock lives in and takes a domino effect until their meat ends up on our plates to eat.Surprisingly people have to worry about the food sanitation in the United States, and it is sad to realize that people have to be worried about the food provided in our country. However, this issue can be resolved. Solutions such as, livestock being raised in a healthy environment by the traditional way, consumers can make better choices for their selves, and they can also stand up for the rights of being able to eat meat without worrying. Change in the food industry will change our health for the better.

Resistance during the Transatlantic Slave Trade Essay

Resistance during the Transatlantic Slave Trade - Essay Example The resistances in Africa were defensive, offensive and protective in nature3. These were meant not only to discourage the Europeans from getting more slaves from Africa but to somehow send a message to the Western world that slavery is really unnatural and that no one has the right to declare that a person can be someone’s property.  Some resistances in African in the 18th century were in the form of relocation, particularly by the West Africans. As the market for slaves increased, many West Africans tried to look for areas that were less accessible to the slave traders. These Africans moved to lake areas where it was difficult for the invaders to cross4. Nevertheless, although some were spared through this way, there was no stopping the European invaders from getting more slaves from Africa.  Another strategy of Africans is by architectural means like building homes and villages with labyrinths, as well as high walls and several points of ingress or entry points, and egr ess or exit points5. This further confused the slave traders as most of them did not know how labyrinths worked. There were no reports, however, regarding the true effectiveness of these architectural works in preventing European invaders from capturing slaves.  Aside from these, there were also protective strategies like captive redemption, or the system of helping each other avoid slavery by using cash protection. Mostly, these were secret societies like those of the Efik and Ekpe, although they were able to help protect the African slave traders6. Still, just like the other previously mentioned strategies, there was no way to account for the effectiveness of captive redemption. After all, it obviously could not accommodate everyone. There were protective strategies but there were also offensive ones. The offensive forms of resistance included several rebellions in Africa itself. Among these were the Mandingo Rebellion in Mali and Niger from 1785-1796, the Hubbu Rebellion in Guinea in the 1850s, and the Bilali Rebellion in Sierra Leone from 1838-1872. These were all armed resistances that helped resist slavery and assert the freedom of the Africans from slavery7. Other offensive strategies included forming alliances among communities in order to protect people from the slave traders; Africans deliberately dropping poisoned food, wine and water along the paths of the European slave traders for an obvious purpose; and young men undergoing military training in order to be able to protect their communities8. The problem is that in many parts of Africa, all cultural and religious movements instituted to counter transatlantic slavery were brutally quelled by the government. One example of this was the Congolese

Analysis & Estimation of Travel Demand Assignment

Analysis & Estimation of Travel Demand - Assignment Example The questions provides a practical basis for collecting the required information for analysis and estimation of the travel demand. Large volumes of information could also be collected from many respondents within the targeted transportation companies in the city. This is typically possible within a relatively short time period. Because no much movement is required when trying to reach the respondents, the survey as a whole is very cost effective. With this survey instrument, the aspects of validity and reliability of the collected data is preserved. The research results can easily and quickly be quantified. Nevertheless, the survey instrument is disadvantageous in that to a certain extent, it is inadequate in understanding certain forms of information that is completely implied such as behaviour, emotions, and feelings with regard to the posed questions. To some extent, the data collected may not be valid enough especially where estimates are considered for answers. There is also the possibility of the respondents interpreting the questions different. Trip generation is basically the fundamental step in the process of initiating transportation forecasting. In this regard, there is the need to acquire all the necessary information that could ultimately lead to an effective travel demand forecasting. Trip generation would help the authorities of the City of Omaha predict number of that could be destined for the city’s traffic analysis zone. In order to achieve the objective of the trip generation step, the questionnaire focuses on residences through the companies offering the transport services. In this case, the first thing considered in designing the questions was the key aspects required in trip generation. The questions were then structured with respect to the variables required for the analysis. The companies involved were some of the key

British and French Colonies. Claire Denis Chocolat (1988) Essay

British and French Colonies. Claire Denis Chocolat (1988) - Essay Example One of her best memories was about their family’s house help whose name was Protee. He possessed a number of desirable traits which included being noble, handsome and extremely intelligent. This movie has a rich history about the colonial empires and it offers a lot of information about the French racial tensions and conflicts and that is the key focus of the following essay. This form of manipulation was portrayed in form of actions occurring in the fields rather than verbally. The French colonists practiced racism both publicly and privately. This was as a result of different people living in different areas and under different circumstances. The movie portrays a very serene environment where France and her family under the care of their father who was a captain in the French army (Beugnet, 2004). Their servants faced racial discrimination both in the house and in the fields. This was clearly manifested by the way the servants, who were all black Africans, were being treated . For example, the servants were forced to do everything in the public, which included taking a shower and eating among others. This was very immoral and unjust according to the societal norms. On the other hand, the whites did everything in private, including sleeping in their bedrooms, bathing in the bathrooms and eating in the dining rooms among others. The French colonial empire also caused unnecessary sexual attraction between members of the opposite sex. This was clearly manifested by Protee, the young boy servant and Aimee. The two were noted to like each other as a result of Aimee always seeing Protee taking a bath in the open field in front of the house. This sexual desire was as a result of the immoral actions brought about by colonialism. This state had both positive and negative effects on the subjects, for the poor little servant, it was a form of humiliation having to be seen naked all the time he decided to take a bath. On the flip side, it also had some positive effe cts, as from it, Aimee developed feelings towards him. The idea of having the power to rule over others led to a lot of conflicts and tensions both within and outside the house. For example, in the kitchen, the black African cook and Aimee had issues due to language barrier and power prevelance. Shatranj Ke Khilari (The Chess Players) The film is focused on various aspects that are characterized by social, political and economic elements in India in the beginning of the 19th century. The events that are focused on the movie are mainly drawn from the eve of the rebellion of India against the British powers in the year 1857 (Dube, 2005). These events included appropriation of the kingdom of Awadh by the British powers, politics that surrounded the development of the East India Company which was owned by the British colony and also the inevitable splitting up of the Indian royals. The film is composed of two stories that run concurrently. One is the story of the invasion of the Indian kingdoms by the British colonial powers and the second one is the reaction of two inseparable friends who are deep lovers of Chess. The two friends are so much into the game of chess to a point that they neglect their vital responsibilities including their families. The two go into exile to a village that is untroubled by the rising events caused by the invasion of the British colony so that they can play Chess in peace. The movie brings out various perceptions about the British colonial powers which include their superiority, friendliness and wealthy. The

Trade Analysis between Brazil and the USA Term Paper

Trade Analysis between Brazil and the USA - Term Paper Example creation of Southern Common Market and participated in the formation of the G-20 as a coalition to represent developing countries in the World trade organization negotiations. Brazil works bi-laterally with the U.S due to her influence in the trade groups. She also co-chairs the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) negotiations as with the U.S. Indeed for the two countries, closer ties serve advantageously both economically and politically. There is mutual benefit when there are good trade relations and the partners have stable political governance. Political stability of any country greatly determines the economic performance of the country. This is evident from the economic recession experienced by the two countries during the Word War II. Economic ties in the U.S and Brazil are much dependent on the two-way trade that is far much empowered by the World Trade Organization. Additional resources and economic growth are the direct benefits realized by the countries in relation to ex port-import trade relations (Schott, 2003, p 2). US recorded the highest imports from and exports to Brazil in the year 1997. However, a sharp decline was noted in 2002 due to the financial crisis experienced in Brazil. A contrast was sited as US imports from Brazil rose in 2002 than in 1997. Bilateral trade between U.S and Brazil has grown rapidly since 1992. The US had commendable trade surplus with Brazil between 1990’s and 2002 when she recorded a drastic merchandise trade deficit with Brazil. United States’ basic exports comprise of industrial manufactured goods such as electric machinery, air crafts and computers. On the other hand, she relies on imports from Brazil that comprise of steel, iron, footwear and mineral fuels. Approximately about 70% of United States’ exports to... In Brazil and the United States, closer ties majorly brought about by the trade relations serve both for economic and political reasons. The two countries have common objectives in trade. Opening markets is beneficial to both boosting innovation and competition. They both have a role to play in order to deepen their trade relations especially bilateral. The success of trade negotiation in WTO and in the hemisphere largely depends on them. An increment in trade and investment in both countries will lead to boosted employment and income. This would also lead to greater cooperation politically, culturally and economically in the hemisphere. Brazil and the U.S both share a role to play in order to deepen their bilateral relations. They have a challenge to ensure better results for their citizen and entire trading block partners (Schott, 2003, p22- 23). Free trade is an essential emerging aspect in these countries’ trade. However, Brazil is still a way off to understanding the benefits associated to the trade and thus is yet to open up her boundaries for the trade. Countries adopt trade policies at will and this explains the difference in trade liberalization between the United States and Brazil. Bilateral and regional trade agreements have put the United States at an advantage in trade relation to Brazil. Prospects are good over future trade relations going with the current signing of trade agreements to enhance mutual trade. It is also crucial that these two countries maintains and develops the already established trade partnership for the well being of the two economies.

Case study analysis and action plan Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Case study analysis and action plan - Essay Example Obviously, her diet is disproportionate to her requirement, and the excess calorie in her diet is contributing to her weight gain. From the history it is apparent that she is binge eating, and given her psychological history, it may be a case of bulimia nervosa (Schlesier-Carter et al., 1989). Since she is ready for a change, a dietary analysis would be needed to examine the imbalance between her current dietary pattern and the requirement for her age, profession, and stature. More importantly, if she is going to an exercise regimen, it would be needed to advise her how much weight she must reduce (Grilo, Masheb, and Berman, 2001). This can be done through the reduction of caloric requirement, and the new dietary advice must contain the maximum permissible calories without affecting the energy requirement. Since bulimia is the suspected cause, there must be provision for handling these issues through appropriate psychotherapeutic interventions (Stice and Fairburn, 2003). As per UK reference values, Susan belongs to the adult age group, and hence her energy requirements are lower, so are the requirements of energy will be lower, although they vary according to age, gender, and activity level. With the data provided, Susans BMI would be 30.86, which as per references is class I obesity (Buttriss, 2000). Taking the ideal BMI to be 20 to 24.9, for Susan, it would be ideal to keep a target of 22 as the BMI, and to achieve that she will have to bring her weight back to 56 kg. This means she will have to lose about 23 kg of weight. She is a secretary by profession, hence her lifestyle may be considered as sedentary. Diet analysis of Susan indicates that she has consumed 2765.24 Kcal on an average per day (Swan, 2004). This comes from on an average of 672 g of carbohydrate and related food consumed including sugar and starch. According to

Imagine yourself in a different century and describe an average day in Assignment

Imagine yourself in a different century and describe an average day in your life - Assignment Example The handle can know how much force is required to lift an object. This was fascinating! As time moved by, the lab became my new home; I loved every independent project there. How I wish I could get access to such stuffs often. No single day passes without me passing by the game park, to watch the remaining species of birds and enjoy the relaxing sound of the three waterfalls. Can there be robotic birds, waterfalls, and trees? I bet not. And maybe never! While appreciating technological prowess, I have developed compassion with nature! I want to protect it because most robotic machines rely on command language. They can end up destroying naturally existing creatures. This must have been a good observation for today I guess! Who really thinks in such a direction? As I head home in the evening, I pass by the vendor machine to pick a cold drink! I sit quietly on a bench nearby to enjoy my drink. Do I love children again? How I wish I could join them in riding their robotic toy vehicles! Unfortunately I cannot because I am past that age! My eyes are left to admire and enjoy their

Visual Arts Analysis of Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Essay

Visual Arts Analysis of Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints - Essay Example The contour and definitiveness of the black veil which highly contrasts the mild flesh suit of her child indicates how the Madonna, in the simplicity of her aura and strength in character as a mother, manages to secure the innocent even to beyond a physical warm keeping. The delicate treatment given to the shapes, especially of the painting’s chief concerns and the shades cast about the throne seemingly manifest gradual departure from the Byzantine standards so as to entertain a style which takes to greater consideration keen details of human sentiment. This naturalist approach may be observed to have been pioneered by Giotto Di Bondone in the way he worked with colors and symbolic arrangement of figures in space which chiefly acquired a linear perspective to serve his purpose of radiating inner human experience. Such modifications in the convention of Western art can be attributed to the essence of marking a transition from the grieving centuries of the Middle Ages to the muc h sought-after tranquility in the time of Renaissance by which intellectual restoration in arts, sciences, and humanities flourished. Since this period entailed new hopes for the European nations waiting for enlightenment to be ushered back in full measure, Giotto took the opportunity of getting critical attention in his involvement with artistic reformation which may be perceived in most of his murals and frescoes (â€Å"Giotto-The Inventor and Innovator†). The undertones of past suffering during the Dark Ages through the chosen mood of shades and the artist’s strokes of varying sharpness or lightness signify Giotto’s innovative contribution in allowing discernment of certain relevant human emotions flow out of the general impression the enthroned structure makes. It particularly responds to the summon of Renaissance for people to obtain back their religious faith and reverence toward the church and its superior role of resolving medieval lack of spiritual vita lity as one further understands the painter’s idea of substantial expansion when Giotto seated the Madonna and child on the throne for which he provided a generous portion of space which likely represents the continuous sensibility of religion and the adherence to the struggling progress of Christianity. The ‘rebirth of learning’ during the Renaissance period had truly shed light of regaining profound interests in several disciplines, especially in the fields of fine arts and architecture where the beauty of intellect flourished back to heights after the Dark Ages among the European nations. As the increasing pursuit for artistic excellence vividly reflects in the exquisite creations of genius artists like Giotto, others were equivalently inspired to develop art forms based on their revolutionary capacity. The ability to achieve prominence and the desired stimulus in the simplicity of style or in less intricate patterns may have influenced the 15th century contem poraries of Giotto Di Bondone to acquire similar interest of attaining to flexibility of form. As such, the three-dimensional persuasion of Leonardo Da Vinci in ‘The Virgin of the Rocks’, c. 1491-1508, made central the well-lighted faces to locate emphasis upon a sublime moment of holiness and humility in the manner

Research Paper on the Psychology of Women Essay

Research Paper on the Psychology of Women - Essay Example en from an early age many times determines the type of vocation and thus pay scale women may believe they must conform to and be satisfied with instead of being determined by their own inherent talents and aptitude for learning. Though females comprise almost half of the workforce, they are bunched together in professions that are traditionally viewed as ‘women’s jobs’ which usually means they receive less compensation for their efforts (U.S. Department of Labor, 2003). The labor force is a system that is segregated on the basis of gender. In 2003, of those employed as administrative assistants and secretaries, more than 96 percent were women who also comprise more than 80 percent of elementary and middle school teachers while 90 percent of those employed in the nursing profession are women according to the Women’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor. These figures support previous studies that confirm the propensity for women to select educational paths and subsequently careers which historically have been deemed by society as the proper role for women (Hopkins & McManus, 1998). Conversely, few women can be found employed in typical ‘blue collar’ vocations that re quire higher levels of physical exertion. For instance, only about 12 percent of all law enforcement officials, eight percent of civil, three percent of construction workers and two percent of electricians are women (U.S. Department of Labor, 2003). The same gender bias prevails in certain areas of intellectual endeavors as well. For example, according to the October 1990 issue of Notices, â€Å"of the 991 doctorates awarded in mathematics by institutions in the U.S. and Canada in 1989-1990, 18 percent of which were awarded to women† (Schafer, 1991). While the lack of women employed in more physical jobs can be explained at least to some degree, the reasons that women are not usually considered as equals to their male counterparts in the sciences and mathematics fields is more of a

Abuelitas Beans Essay Example for Free

Abuelitas Beans Essay Nothing can be more enticing to a nose than waking up to the delicious aroma of simmering beans. The scent compels one to peal away the comforter and stagger into the kitchen for a bowl of creamy delicious beans. Pinto beans have been a staple in Mexican cuisine for hundreds of years, and every family has his/her own recipe. I recall, as a young girl growing up in a large, Mexican family, that there was always a large pot of legumes ready to nourish twelve mouths for less than five-dollars. Dad always ended his meal rubbing his barrel stomach while saying his favorite aphorism, â€Å"Pansa llena, corazon contento† (â€Å"Full belly, happy heart†), which always meant that the beans were delicious. Here is Abuelita’s recipe to fill the tummy of those that are endearing to one’s heart. Cooking beans really is not that hard. First, gather the supplies needed: one, five-quart slow-cooker with a ceramic liner with a glass lid cover, a sturdy plastic cooking spoon ( Abuelita always said that one should never stir the beans with a metal spoon or they will stick and burn. I obey her. ), one-pound dried pinto beans, one-half aromatic white onion, two fresh garlic cloves, water, and two tablespoons kosher salt. Several people have asked me, â€Å"Why a slow-cooker? † Well, all the women in the family cook the legumes in a cazuela (an earthenware pot made of clay). The cookware is either given to the bride at her wedding with hopes that her culinary endeavors will produce a happy marriage, or it is an inheritance from her mother or grandmother. The beans have a better taste if cooked in the cazuela, at least that is what the women in my family declare. I on the other hand, embrace the beauty of the slow cooker; it frees me to leave the house to run errands, and I have never endured stinky-burned beans. Once all the supplies and ingredients have been gathered and prepped, proceed by placing beans in a colander. Rinse the beans and run them through one’s hands to make sure debris is washed away, and small stones are picked out. Put the beans into the slow-cooker and cover them with water. Furthermore, add all the ingredients in the cooker. Except for the salt. Set the temperature at high for six to eight hours. After one hour, the earthy aroma starts to penetrate the whole house, reminding one of what will be for consumption. Please, if you want plump beans do not stir the beans during the first two hours. After approximately three hours, check to see if water is needed, due to water evaporation, and the legumes absorb a lot of water. Always add hot water never cold because the cold temperature lowers the heat and toughens the beans. Once another three hours has past, test the legumes for doneness. I was told when one bites into a bean, it should be soft and creamy. As a result from respecting the process, and not disturbing them, the pot liquid will have thickened leaving a delicious dark chocolate color broth for a healthy soup. Lastly, but not least, it is time to salt the beans. Add two tablespoons of kosher salt and stir with a wooden or plastic spoon. Go ahead and taste the broth and decide if more salt is needed. Always remember to gradually add salt to the beans since adding is easier than extracting. In the end, set the temperature to warm and ladle beans into the bowl of one’s choice. In conclusion, if an individual follows these simple steps of gathering supplies, for example, a slow-cooker, it will make the process of cooking worry free. Basically, pinto beans are easy to make, but easier to consume any time of day, resulting in everyone rubbing his/her tummy’s with contentment. â€Å"Buen Provecho! †(Enjoy your meal).

Traditional Education vs. Online Education Essay Example for Free

Traditional Education vs. Online Education Essay There are different ways to access higher education, either through online education or traditional education. For centuries, online education could not compare to traditional education. Today, online education competes with traditional education in many ways. Though online education has become very popular, how does one know which is best for him or her? Identifying the pros and cons through flexibility, communication, interaction, skills development, and affordability will help the student decide the best option. Although online education seems to be taking over the traditional means of education, both are great options in different ways. The bottom line is that the world is becoming technologically smart. For one juggling home, school, and a job, it can be difficult commuting to class every day. Online education eliminates the need to attend class. Online courses allow the student to access coursework from an Internet site. Motivated, responsible, independent learners can work at their own pace, whenever is suitable for them. This allows the flexibility that a traditional classroom setting does not provide. However, one who struggles to be self-motivated may fall quickly behind. In a traditional classroom setting the student has to attend class on campus. Traditional education is for a learner who needs more lecturing to understand and also needs to be able to ask questions as he or she learns. A student who is enrolled at a traditional university gets the chance to take advantage of the university’s facilities. These facilities include places like the student union and the gym. If the student chooses online education, the student has to make sure he or she has a computer, Internet usage, and a backup plan in case he or she has a computer failure. Though flexibility is important in choosing which option is best, there are many other things that should be taken into consideration. Communication and interaction is an important factor in learning. Online education does not offer the face-to-face interaction traditional education offers. Online courses provide interactions between the student and the content, interactions with other students, and interactions with the instructor using different forms of computer- mediated communication. These interactions take place through e-mail, chat, and discussion threads. Traditional education allows the student to have direct contact with the instructor to ask questions with instant feedback. An online student is in a class with instructors and students from all over the world whom they will never meet face-to-face. Traditional education allows the student to interact and to meet new people, which results in a growth in contacts and networking opportunities. For the student who strives on the quick exchange of ideas between the instructor and the student, the classroom environment may be a better option. On the other hand, a student who experiences anxiety when called on to speak during class may prefer the time given to reflect on his or her responses offered by online courses. Communication provided by both online education and traditional education allows a convenient way for the student to communicate with the instructor and classmates, thus producing a great learning environment. The main reason a student is enrolled in school is to learn and develop new skills. Though online education allows a student to learn in a comfortable, quiet environment, without being distracted by others, online education may be difficult for a learner who has a hard time learning without direct, face-to-face interaction with the instructor. Traditional education allows teacher-student interaction and instant feedback that online learning cannot provide. Depending on the interaction level in a classroom setting, a shy student may attend class without providing communication ideas, which forces the student to learn by a vocal exchange with the instructor. This may limit one’s ability to learn. Online education is not for a student who struggles learning from books or other written material. Online courses involve a lot of writing practice because there is little opportunity for questions to get answered verbally. In a traditional classroom setting, the students have the ability to exchange ideas and information with each other, as well as directly with the instructor. Questions are answered immediately, as opposed to waiting for an online response. The instructor is also able to focus on a particular subject, inspiring the student in a way that learning through an online course cannot. However, online courses offer some unique opportunities for learning and developing skills, but it is important to be familiar with computers before deciding on online schooling. One of the most crucial factors about achieving higher education is cost. Both online and traditional education can incur a lot of debt. Online education, in most cases, is less expensive. Traditional education is more expensive, especially considering tuition fees, accommodations, and transportation. Enrolling in an online course eliminates the money that has to be spent on gas, parking, or childcare. There is no need for expensive housing, since the student does not live on campus. Another pro of schooling online is textbooks can be downloaded to the computer instead of spending money to purchase them. There are options for paying for schooling. Online education and traditional education both offer financial aid packages, including loans and grants. There are different types of loans a student may qualify for, which has a time frame of when it has to be paid back. Overall, before the student decides which option is suitable for him or her, he or she must know the cost of enrolling and have a plan in place to repay to avoid a lot of debt. The choices of online education and traditional education are both excellent options to pursue higher education. Online education programs can be an awarding experience for a student wanting to earn a degree at his or her own pace. Studies have shown that a student who is mature, independent, and self-motivated becomes very successful in the online classroom. Studies have also shown that a student who is a dependent learner may find it challenging to take on the responsibility of an online program, thus making an extremely successful student in a traditional classroom setting. Ultimately, the student makes the final choice as to which educational program suits him or her by carefully identifying the pros and cons through flexibility, communication, interaction, skills development, and affordability.

Problem Faced By The Tourism Industry

Problem Faced By The Tourism Industry 1.0 Introduction: 1.1Background/ Preamble: In todays world the top three most important industries are telecom, tourism and IT. According to some estimates tourism shares 11% of the total worlds employment and around 100 million were employed in tourism industry during 2008. Tourism sectors around the world have shown phenomenal growth. Over the last quarter of a century it has grown by 500%. Many economically weak countries are generating their largest share of GDP from the tourism sector. Thailands tourist industry started to grow when Thailand launched Visit Thailand Year in 1987. This growth remained constant despite the Gulf war in 1991. This growth period is called as the Golden Decade of Thai Tourism. Economic growth of Thailand also proved to be very helpful for the growth of the tourism sector over the years. According to an official research the tourists coming to Thailand had reached an astonishing 42.5 million. The focus on Thailands government was not the only reason for its growth of the sector; there were other factors which helped the growth. These factors include the prevailing peace after the Cold War, the overall expansion of the countries in the pacific regions, the focus on tourism in the countries around Thailand, the growth and feasibility of the trade between countries, the innovations in the airline sector, the innovations in telecom industry which increased the feasibility of communication and others. The fact that all these factors were very helpful for the growth of Thailands tourism industry was that it was the first country to recognize the advantages of the tourism and set out to implement its tourism campaigns. Thailand also had location advantages as a tourist country as the tourist coming to Thailand also had the option to go either to China or India which are also one of the leading tourist countries. Following the growth of tourism in Thailand was the growth on middle income class. The later growth stimulated the desire of Thais to travel abroad too. The growth in local tourists has over all declined the net income from the tourism sector of Thailand. Currently tourism sector of Thailand has a 6.5 percent share in the GDP. Although the tourism industry of Thailand is very flourishing, but it still lags behind other sectors, such as manufacturing and services. Tourists coming to Thailand spend 16 billion dollar each year and spend 9 days in Thailand on average. Foreign visitors are not the only tourists Thailand depends on. The local residents of Thailand are also a major part of the tourists. Although the amount spent by these tourists is far less than the foreign tourists. In 2008 more than half of the international tourists were from East Asia, Malaysia and Japan. Malaysian visitors have a majority in the overall number of foreign investors to the country. European countries give close to 25% of the total number of visitors. Around 700,000 Australians visited Thailand in 2008; the number is huge when compared to the total residents in Australia. 1.2 Trends from 2007 to 2011 The number of tourists in the 1stQtr and 2ndQtr of 2009 was around 3.6m and 2.9m respectively. The numbers of tourists were lower than the 1stQtrs of 07 and 08. In the 3rdQtr/09 the no. of visitors is similar to that of both 07 and 08. In the 1stQtr/09 there was the highest number of visitors than the previous two years. The no. of visitors was highest during the 1stQtr/10. Due to the political instability from April to May 10, the number of visitors was low. The number of visitors was lower by about 1 to 2 million during year 09 and year 10. Still the number of arrivals in year 10 was record breaking. This shows that visitors forget the instabilities in only around 2 to 3 months. 2.0 Literature review Countries around the world are facing several problems with the tourism industry. Looking at the current trends there are a number of factors affecting tourism industries. Some of these factors are economic factors, technological factors, political factors, demographic factors and cultural factors. 2.1 Economic factors: Economic factors of both the host and the visitors country impacts a countrys tourism industry. The overall buying power of the visitors acts as a very important determinant for the tourist industry. In some countries the cost the vacations is very high. This discourages visitors from going to the specific country. On the other hand some countries offer cheap vacation packages allowing more visitors to come to their country. Over all global prosperity also plays a very important role. If the over all economical condition of countries is good this means in most cases that the purchasing power is higher in those countries. When the standards of living are better and the purchasing power is better people can afford more luxuries. Tourism is also considered as a luxury and the overall numbers of tourists from the specific countries grow. Thailand is one of the favorite places for tourists as it provides every thing that tourists want. Low cost and high quality services, beautiful beaches and natural environment. This also backfires for the host country at many places. Due to higher economic growth in the host country, the residents of the country also will to go abroad for vacations. This causes outflow of money from the economy known as leakage. The overall outflow is then balanced by the inflow of currency from other countries. The net income from the tourism industry of the host country is lowered over all due to the local population going abroad for vacations. Inflation is also a very important determinant when it comes to tourism sector. If the inflation rate is higher in the host country compared to the visitors country, the overall spending by the visitors is low in the economy as the price of products and services is higher in the host country. On the other hand if the inflation is lower in the host country compared to the visitors country, visitors tend to spend more in the host country. Thailand is facing a high inflation rate because of increase in the prices of crude oil but the problem is global. But due to difference in exchange rates inflation does not have a major impact on the tourist industry. For example, the appreciation of the euro against the US dollar has increased the number of EU tourists in Thailand. Along with this the purchasing power of Americans in Thailand has been stable, despite the depreciation of the dollar. In order to maintain the price competitiveness of exports the bank of Thailand has not allowed the Baht to appreciate against the dollar. The baht is under upward pressure, and it has an adverse affect on Thailands tourist industry. Thailands low price level has made it a most reasonable tourist place. 2.2 Technological factors In the current era aviation technology has seen a lot of advancements. Now days the major cause of inflation in many countries is the increase in fuel prices, but it also greatly hampers the tourism sector. As the increase in the fuel prices also increase the airline ticket prices. Therefore aircraft building companies are bringing a lot of innovation to the air craft designs. Due to this reason the over all air fare is greatly reduced. Countries now pay attention to keep the best and most technologically advanced planes at their main airports so that more visitors can come in. Infrastructure is very important factor for tourists on vacations. Tourism is considered as luxury act and tourists from across the world want the best or atleast sufficient infrastructure in the country they are about to visit. Example, Dubai is considered a famous tourist location only because it has better infrastructure than many other countries in its region. Tourists when think of Dubai, they know that it will be a place where they will have all the facilities that they might require; this is a global mind set for most of the tourists. Countries therefore must spend heavily on their infrastructure for the growth in the tourism sector. Now days the use of IT has been a focus of most of the countries. People around the world are now more used to of IT than any other mode of communication. Even visitors now days search online for holiday packages. Countries must make sure that ample information is available relating to their country and tourist spots which people around the world can see and be motivated to visit their country. 2.3 Political factors Visitors avoid areas of political unrest mainly when they visit other countries for vacations. This is mostly because of the mindset that people want to enjoy and relax during the vacations. An extreme example can of Egypt currently. Due to the protests for the change of president and protests in previous months the overall tourist industry of Egypt has recently collapsed. In order to achieve a liberal democracy, Thailands economy is facing a fluctuating and worsening political condition. However as tourists are mostly not interested in any countrys political condition then the political instability would not affect the tourism industry. Instable security conditions can be a major problem for the tourism industry. However research shows that if there is any instability in some parts of the country and the political turmoil is happening in a local area then it would not have a major impact on the tourist industry. Such as worsening of political condition in the southern province of Thailand does not have a declining impact on the tourist industry. However if the political instability increases and reaches other parts of the country it will boost tourists insecurity and fear. It will build a negative perception in the minds of tourists about that place. Also it might have a negative impact on tourists plans for example, if the crisis in Thailand increase s and reaches other parts of the country than it might have a n adverse affect on the tourist industry _ bomb blasts in Bangkok has led to a negative affect on the development of the tourist Industry. Individual and situational characteristics have affected tourists a lot because of the availability on information. It should be considered when taking in the account the security of tourist destinations, that the political instability is exaggerated by the news reporting. Several incidents in Thailand such as terrorists strike are given greater importance by the media than major road accidents. Road accidents in Thailand create a major security risk than a political unrest- and tourists are out most of their time and face many traffic jams every day. How ever Thailand is fairly a safe place than several other countries. Except for political instability, terrorism also has an indirect relation with the amount of tourists visiting a country. Terrorists also try to target the most important sites of a country to spread their terror. Most of these sites are the same sites to which tourists around the world come to visit. An example can be the pyramids of Geza which can we seen as an ideal spot for terrorists to attack. Thea Sinclair and Adam Blake of WTO said The contribution of tourism and travel to both industrialized and developing countries is now so great that any downturns in the level of activity are a cause for concern. The repercussions extend beyond activities directly associated with tourism, notably airlines, hotels and catering, to sectors that supply intermediate or final goods that are purchased by firms and employees in the industry, so that all sectors of the economy are affected to a greater or lesser effect. In the above quotation they are clearly pointing out the adverse impact of terrorist activities on tourism industry and how this adverse impact amplifies over time. Examples can be of cases from target killing of tourists in Egypt, bombing in Nairobi, hijacking of planes for the 9/11 attack etc. These activities not only collapse the tourist industry of the specific countries, but it also impacts the overall global growth of tourism. As mentioned above 9/11 had one of the most harmful impacts on global tourism industry. The overall impact of the 9/11 attacks cannot be measured but according to an estimate but it lowered world tourism by 10%. To regain the confidence most of the countries are using several encouragement tools such as lowering their air fares. 2.4 Demographic Factors Demographics of countries also impact the tourism industry. Living patterns and population affects both the demand of tourists and the supply of labour in the tourist industry. Example the overall percentage of tourists from Australia is higher though their population is lower than many other countries. 2.5 Cultural factors It cannot be ignored that culture is one of the strongest factors affecting the tourist numbers. It can be crucial point when it comes to competitiveness between the countries. Tourism nowdays basically stems out of cultural attractions. And this is this bond of culture and tourism that makes a destination more attractive than other to either go as a tourist, employee, investor or emigrant. 3 Objectives of the study The main purpose of this study is: To find out what are the current social problems Thailand is facing regarding its tourism industry. The Yellow Wallpaper -- Literary Analysis, Gilman

Charlotte Perkins Gilman 1892 gothic and horror short story â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† traces the mental decline of a woman while undergoing a â€Å"rest cure†. This captivating story illustrates the stifling plight of the protagonist in a patriarchal society. Her husband, John, a physician, has taken the narrator, a new mother, to a rented country home for the summer in order for her to recover from postpartum psychosis. He isolates her in an upstairs nursery, a room with barred windows, a nailed down bed, and odious yellow wallpaper, and forbids her to write, in accordance with the philosophy of the â€Å"rest cure†. Although the constraints placed on the protagonist proved to be repressive, it leads her to an intriguingly dangerous obsession with â€Å"the yellow wallpaper† that causes her to triumph over societal oppression and constraints within her marriage, giving her a heroic identity. The writer conveys all this through her ingenious usage of th e image of â€Å"the yellow wallpaper†, which functions as a part of the setting, an object correlation to the narrator’s physical and mental repression, and lastly as a symbol of her life. According to one critic â€Å"The subjection of women originated in prehistoric times when the males first monopolized all social activity and women were confined to motherhood and domestic duties† (Degler 178). During the nineteenth century these societal traditions were still imposed on women. Quawas confirms this statement when she states â€Å"In the nineteenth century, women, as agent of moral influence, [are] expected to maintain the domestic sphere as a cheerful, pure haven for their husbands to return to [home] each evening† (A New Woman’s Journey into Insanity). Because of these expectancies the protagonist is a power... ...lpaper† Gilman clearly illustrates by the use of symbols, imagery, characters to display how women were treated in a patriarchal society. The writer appears to have semi-melancholic mood throughout the story. Gilman clearly shows how the stifling plight of the narrator who was kept in isolation becomes defiant and gains a deeper understanding of her life and role in society. The woman in the wallpaper does not only represent the narrator’s own divided self but all women who are overly restrained and bound by a society that deem these women incapable of self-actualization. As a result of her preoccupation with the â€Å"the yellow wallpaper† she descends into madness, which ultimately enabled her to triumph over marital and societal constraints. Therefore the writer demonstrates that in order to gain liberty one suffers immensely before change is accomplished.

Pheidias :: Essays Papers

Pheidias Often credited as being the â€Å"greatest† of all Ancient Greek sculptors, Pheidias, was a man gifted with both talent and turmoil. No one specific piece can definitely be attributed to the artist, but historical record suggests that he was the supervisor and main sculptor for works such as the Athena Parthenos and the Zeus for the temple at Olympia. Because many sculptures often attributed to him were designed with large quantities of gold and ivory, he is believed to have been extremely proficient with fine materials. He was Athenian; this scholars do not debate. His master is said to have been Agelades of Argos, though there is no proof to substantiate the claim#. Many believe that the majority of his pieces were commissioned by the city of Athens and, in turn, attribute many large public monumental sculptures to Pheidias, even though the dates do not always support this. Through my research, I agree with R.G. Haggar, that his career was launched when he was commissi oned to sculpt an Athenian monument to Marathon. Scholars argue whether or not the funds for this project came from the spoils of the war, or the Athenian government. In several ancient texts the name Pheidias appears and seems to always be followed by a positive statement about his sculpture. Plotinus (third century AD) writes of the giant statue of Zeus at Olympia and praises Pheidias for his skill, but the only proof that scholars and art historians have that the statue even existed is a coin that depicts an image similar to the way the statue is described#. R.G. Haggar contends that â€Å"the Parthenon statues remain the greatest monument to his genius† (Haggar 22), but does not believe he sculpted the majority of the images himself. Haggar believes that his role as â€Å"supervisor† over the massive commission was crucial to the presentation of the famed Athenian battles. Less than a year after the completion of the Athena Parthenos, Pheidias was brought to trial: the charge, embezzlement. A.W. Lawrence, who does not give specific sources, believes that he was exonerated from the embezzlement charges because all of the precious metal from the statue could be weighed. After the charge failed, he was again charged, publicly, this time with both misapp ropriating public funds and sacrilege. The latter charge existed because he had depicted himself and Perikles on the shield held by Athena.

Frame in the Movie Yellow Earth :: Movie Film Essays

Frame in the Movie Yellow Earth The movie, Yellow Earth, focuses on images that use mise en scene aesthetics. Bazin advocates the use of mise en scene rather than using montage. In mise en scene, the director takes account for everything that appears in the frame. The director also takes the effects in the onstage space of the frame. Some examples of effects in the frame are lighting, setting, costume, and character behavior. Even though mise en scene literally means, â€Å"placing of the scene†, contextually it means all the effects, actions, and settings in a frame prior to editing. Due to the lack of editing, mise en scene (in contrast to montage) usually presents a long shot to capture more of a realistic emotion. In mise en scene, the shot shows a close up of a character to show emotion. In mise en scene, unlike in montage, cause and effect take an important place in the same, lengthy shot. A reoccurring scene in the movie, the scene of Ciuqiao collecting water from the river, uses mise en scene effectively. The director of Yellow Earth, Chen Kaige, accurately portrays the perils of Ciuqiao’s life. Everyday Ciauqiao goes to the river to gather water for her family. A significant scene in the movie points out where Ciuqiao expresses her grievances by singing. As the sun gradually sets, the sky sullenly darkens. The sunset sky signifies the young girl’s feelings. The dark sky suggests that Ciuqiao feels sad and downtrodden; however, the pockets of sunlight may show that there is still hope for this young girl. Her singing everyday at the same time demonstrates even more significance in the movie. The river in the scene, gigantic and vigorous, seems to separate this young girl from the world in which she knows. With the visit from the soldier, Ciuqiao realizes that life is worth living beyond the Yellow Earth.

Challenges Faced by the Steel Industry

Challenges faced by the steel industry Introduction3 Challenges faced by the steel industry3 Conclusion13 Work cited During the 1950s,the European steel market, steel production and import unrelentingly augmented. This created surplus provisions on the promotion of the Six. Due to this, there was deterioration of the market together with its selling value. This drop continued as a result of antagonism from inexpensive introductions from eastern nations. Therefore, the European steel industry was actually positioned at a drawback for the reason that its cost prices were higher than those of its contestants (Steel Industry and the Environment p. 1). Consequently, there was a proposal from the High Authority that there should be limitations in the import steel from third countries and also increase in the convention tariff by a certain percentage. This proposal brought concern to the European administration and industry, which feared that their operating associates would take castigatory procedures. In the year 1963, the High power, during the reign of the Italian President Dino Del Bo, there was a proposal of the ordinary viable guiding principle. On the other hand, the administrations differed on the concern that, the level of fortification was only afforded for by the ordinary exterior tariff (Steel Industry and the Environment p. 1). Therefore, the High power made use of its authorities in order for there to be adoption of a number of proposals which included, the mandatory where there was concern of there aspirations. Though there was a suggestion of an option in regard to the means of achieving the aims. This offered an invitation to the administrations in order for there to be a set up of tangential fortification at a level which is at a minimum height of 9 %. This was, at an instance where there was a requirement by Italy. This was later followed by the French Government criticism that the alternative had been made to the supranational technique, though this was the only available alternative despite the divergence amid the administrations. In the end, there was a challenge by the role of the High Authority, by numerous administrations, which turned to be a question once again (The European Steel Industry p. 6). The encouraging substance outcome attained during 2004 by the steel mills are still being working out their optimistic impact on the in general movement of this commerce throughout the first half of 2005. There has been a great cover on the stipulation for the steel inventions on the entire manufacture of the first section regardless of the increase in the quantity of mills. Therefore, there has been augmentation in their production, which in turn will offer response to the promotion necessities that have confirmed a stipulation in the expansion, even though this has emerged lethargic in some areas and burly in others (The European Steel Industry p. 6). The Arab area was possibly among those main sections, which have observed an augment in manufacture of, and also stipulation for the steel products throughout the first quarter of this year. In most it has been made known that the construction statistics of the most prolific nations in the Arab region have exposed an augment in the production expansion speed of extended and level manufactures. According to the predictions of the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) the global stipulation for the steel creations there was an observed growth of 3. 7% throughout the year of 2005. Therefore, there is an expected increase in the demand by the IISI that the stipulation will surpass one billion tons for the first time that is up by 36 million tons in comparison to 2004 (Challenges and Opportunities of Steel industry . . 1). According to Areclor, which is the largest steel manufacturer globally, there has been a contradiction in the views expressed by number of companies in the decision making in the reduction of their own production due to the slowdown in the demand and also in the maintenance of the supply or stipulation demand. All this is in spite of the growth of t he statistics, which point out to the augmentation in stipulation and an increase in the production in a number of regions in the globe (â€Å"Analysis of economic indicators of the EU metals industry p. 1). This has led to the declaration that there will be reduction in the manufacture of even formations by a number of tons in the first half of that year due to the low stipulation in the promotion of the European Union. Although, this decrease unreservedly aspires at offering support to the advertising costs that the company has already publicized. This has clinched an augmentation of Euro 15/ton effectual early in the second quarter. The second largest steel producer, â€Å"Mittal Steel†, provided some analysis that opted to taking comparable applications to that of Arcelor (â€Å"Analysis of economic indicators of the EU metals industry p. ) This offered assistance in the reduction of the creations within the perception of the requirement of upholding the provisions and stipulation stability of sustaining the values at the cost of measure. Therefore, that is what the steel industries have been determined to attain in 2005, particularly after the augmentations that took place i n the prices of the raw substance. Particularly, the iron ore industry, which had indentures concluded in the year 2005 with an augment of up to 71. 5% over the stage of preceding year. There may be an illustration to a new path for this steel manufacturing during this year (The European Steel Industry p. 6). Therefore, this tendency of the modifications observed by the global steel markets, which are determined in the light of the promotion actions and through the proposals which were being taken by the main corporations. This controlled the majority of the steel production internationally, which may depict a new path for this production during that year. This track was set as a foundation on viewpoint punctuality from, sustaining value at the cost of measure. Therefore, this may somehow or one more, signify that the steel cost will keep on going in the same drift observed by the steel creations during 2004 in addition to the first quarter of 2005, to be precise, the increasing tendency of prices. Therefore, this may lead to the increase on the complexities facing the steel customers in a number of the main overwhelming segments at the front of which are the sectors of building, manufacturing productions and cylinders and conduit manufacturing (The European Steel Industry p. ). The Arab steel manufacturing saw an apparent enlargement throughout the year 2004 and early 2005. Therefore, this development is symbolized in escalating the manufacture, which had a powerful justification in entering into indenture on the measure manufactured throughout the first quarter and measures of some fractions of that year. There must be a stimulation of the necessity of making as a severe review of the situation of the markets as to take into deliberation of the well-matched provisions and stipulations. This is all in order to shun any saturation under the force of the requirements of manufacturers for there to be an augmentation in the production which may result in a turn down in cost and materialization of the price antagonism in the promotions. Despite, there was a hold back, which commenced to come into continuation for a number of steel creations in a number of promotions (The European Steel Industry p. 8). The monetary recuperation experienced by most Arab promotions because of the high gas and oil costs comprised an encouragement to the surroundings for the affluence of the preponderance of the other different divisions. This led to the prevention of the quick appearance of the holding back circumstances of stipulation in some intense segments. Nevertheless, this delay came into continuation when the steel overwhelming segments became powerless in the take up of the sustained augment in the cost of the produces, which may enlarge into a higher enlargement in the prospect (The European Steel Industry p. 8). The increase observed in the steel costs, which were further than many prospects, stand in itself occasions and confronts. These occasions were to be made use of, hence requiring that the confrontations should have been examined that the steel manufacturers will be required to maintain the explosion, which it has observed. This detonation was given a productive suggestion in the enhanced circumstances of the steel industries, which have also offered contribution to inspiration of the expansion procedures of the steel manufacturing. This is only achieved by having reflections of coming up with a number of many innovative developments (The European Steel Industry p. 6. ). Privatization of the European steel manufacturing has made a significant move in the direction of a more competent manufacturing organization. The major confrontation of the industry is the post-privatization and is required to convene the prospect of the industry’s innovative stakeholders. This is in different to the administrations, classified shareholders who in turn have different or even more monetarily familiarized objectives. Those industries that are possessed by the state have more focus on the maintenance of the production volume in order to secure jobs rather than on their end product presentation. Differently in the case of the private shareholder, there is more focus on the average return, which implies that there is a look into the enjoyment of the price of the share together with its bonuses. This takes place over a given period of time in order for they’re to be an evaluation of the presentation of the reserves of the steel markets (Directorate Science, Technology And Industry p. 2). . More and more, the European steel market is required to have an international competition with other different segments in the steel industry for capital to investment prospects. Therefore, the steel industry is required to show and at the same time demonstrate the worth formation possible of their approaches to the worldwide monetary society. Increase in the concealed possession and commercial awareness has offered assiststance to the steel corporations to function outside countrywide limitations and optimize their possessions organizations in the European background, focusing construction mainly in superior worth creations that are added. Over a number of years, the European steel makers have combined productions, exchanged possessions, cooperative undertaking, easing unity of the European steel industry (Metal Bulletin Research p. 1). In the opening new Challenges in the industry, if continued at present circumstances, the company’s improvement is likely to put additional damage on the energy, carbon dioxide and on our ecological trail in universally and also the raw material possessions. Other challenges that come about in this steel industry will be due to the high anticipation on the increase of energy stipulation. Therefore, the demand in energy will add to with about 60 % amid 2002 and 2030. In excess of 66% of the augment in global power stipulation amid 2002 and 2030 is likely to originate from those nations that are on the rise. Such countries are particularly in Asia. Also China counts for over 20% of the entire augment (Metal Bulletin Research p. 1). In the enhancement of the carbon dioxide confrontation, there is a likeliness of ArcelorMittal decreased carbon dioxide emanations by over 20% since 1990, through scientific expansion and reservations. Therefore this consequence surpasses the European Kyoto target by about two and half times. Although there is still much further development to comprehend as steel creation in countries, for instance like the CIS or China has a much higher carbon dioxide emanation speed, up to two times the heights which are allowed in, North America and Western Europe (The European Steel Industry 2001 p. 6. ). Despite all the challenges, there is no jeopardy of shortage, although a number of features are likely to lead to a good deal of lower quality resources. There are also, steel corporations that offer protection to their enduring supplies through upright incorporation. Since 1999, there has been an increase in the stipulation in the world steel steadily. Nevertheless, this augmentation has been in acceleration since 2002 and has symbolized up to around 50 million tones additional yearly. In 2003, there was an increase in the world steel expenditure increased by about 6. 6% measuring up to 2002, and additional enhancement by 6% in 2004 and 5% in 2005 were in expectation (Directorate Science, Technology And Industry p. 2). This strong rush in the consumption of steel is as a consequence of the spectacular acceleration of familial steel in terms of its stipulations in China where there has been an average of 2. 6% yearly steel consumption that had been increasing by over the time 1995 to 2000. This augmentation has been by some 25% yearly ever since 2001 and there is an anticipated growth which is likely to take place at a rate which is a very fast pace also in both 2004 and 2005. In comparison to this, there was a decline in the consumption of steel in the rest of the world by 4. 2% in 2001 and since then there has been an annual rate of 2. % (Directorate Science, Technology And Industry p. 2). There was a turn down in the steel expenditure OECD region by 0. 5% in 2003, which was a total difference to the year 2002. This therefore, gave an indication of an 8. 9% reduction in North America that counterbalanced a 2. 6% add to in Europe and a 4. 5% augmentation in the Asian-Pacific region. Due to the bett er economic conditions in the region during 2004, the steel expenses in the OECD were anticipated to rise by nearly 3%, with the North American as the promotion grasped most of the augmentation (+5. 7%) and more reasonable increase in Europe (+2. %) and Asia (+1. 3%). Therefore, the tendency was anticipated to persist also in 2005 (Directorate Science, Technology And Industry p. 2). Other many challenges that are facing the steel industry, include, the increase in the considerable steel prices that has led to more generation of profit in the industry of steel. However this has also led to the reduction in the limitations due to the spectacular add to in prices of raw materials and shipment. There are also some jeopardizes of the scarcity for scrap and coke that help in the process of manufacturing steel. Therefore, the important enlargement in prices of most steel creations at the commencement of 2004 created troubles for many industries that were consumed steel (The European Steel Industry 2001 p. 3. ) There was an expectation that, as the cost of the raw materials begged off within that year, there was anticipation that the cost of steel was likely to stay put at comparatively high heights for the rest of that year. In common with the augmentation in the cost of the raw material, there was a dramatic increase in the transportation costs. Also there was an increase in the contract charges for huge vessels which augmented fourfold in a single years, as of 17 000 $/day in January 2003 to 68 000 $/day in early 2004. However afterwards, the rates of shipment began to decline and were likely continue with the decline taking into consideration the limitations on loaning that was introduced by the Chinese administration in order to deliberate the expansion (Directorate Science, Technology And Industry p. 2). In the current years, the opening between aptitude and manufacture condensed. This lessening in the past few years was mainly significant in the OECD region, where steel-manufacturing aptitude had confirmed a net decrease of about 41. 5 million tones, or 6. 7%; a further net reduction of some 15 million tones which was anticipated by 2005. In the NIS, most of the outdated unproductive surplus aptitude has been blocked. Though, with the increase in the familial stipulation and a high level of exports, a number of innovative capacities are anticipated to come on stream in the near prospect. Also pressure and complexities in raw substance markets lasted up to the end of 2005, by which time alterations that were expected by contractors assist in the easing of the complexities (Directorate Science, Technology And Industry p. 2). There are also a number of challenges that are faced by the steel industry. They include, the steel market is experiencing a holding back in the stipulation. This is happening in both the restricted and worldwide face. Therefore, due to this, there are a number of smaller producers who are really far prolonged with arrears, and are taking damage. At that height of the promotion, there are clear indications of the effects of the deceleration. There are a number of key reasons that are accountable for the turn down of the stipulation in the steel industry. The initial cause is the rate of interest indecision that has put anxiety on the customer expenditure, in general. There is also a condensed customer expense that has affected all industries to some level (Woodley, et al p. 6). As there is reduction in the expenditure of the customers in the chain value, there is a reduction in the volumes and profits of the retailers and, in turn, the contractors and manufacturers. This clearly indicates that once there is talk in the reduction of the interest rate, there is a likeliness of the opinions of people turning positive hence leading to more expenditure from the customers. The other reason that has led to the economic deceleration is the international sub prime, which commenced in the US and has been making effect throughout the monetary markets globally. Therefore, there is anticipation since the nation is still waiting to see if it will get affected. Therefore, the impact of the US hold back is likely to be insightful and it is important for the world to work through it and the extremes of the precedent (Woodley, et al p. 6). Conclusion The steel industry has had a number of challenges that have had a great impact in the sector hence lowering its income. They include, the steel market experiencing a holding back in the stipulation. This is happening in both the restricted and worldwide face. Therefore, from the observation, there is a clear indication that the steel industry had had it all in terms of its economy, demand and supply. There is a likeliness of the company observing an augmentation in its stipulation for all cold-rolled, thin measure stainless steel. This is because the cookery facilities are generally among the last things to be improved prior to any event like that (Woodley, et al p. 8). Therefore, in spite of the recession experienced in universally, there is likeliness that there has been fragmentation in the stainless steel market, as the tank-tainer promotion explodes in harsh contrast with the rest of the industry. This kind of trend is not rare in the stainless steel industry in addition to the carbon steel industry. This is because the possessions have got an extensive variety of submissions together with their duration of use on many potentially contradictory markets. Therefore, there is a possibility of a number of divisions in the promotion showing an improvement while others indicate a recession. Therefore, this is not a bad thing in the industry of steel though the most important thing is for the steel market to be prepared for the challenges Woodley, et al p. 6) Work cited â€Å"Analysis of economic indicators of the EU metals industry: the impact of raw materials and energy supply on competitiveness. † European Commission, 2006 â€Å"Challenges and Opportunities of Steel industry† 2005. 31March 209 http://www. arabsteel. info/total/long_editor_last_e. asp? Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been Versus Smooth Talk

The saying goes the only difference amid a tr agedy and a comedy is the finis. Meaning no matter how tragic or comedic a tommyrot begins, the shutting is what determines what type of study was t obsolete (thus what genre it travel in). This concept of revokeings is greatly exemplified through the equivalence of the trivial romance Where Are You Going, Where present You Been by Joyce Carol Oates and the involve the story was establish on called Smooth lecturing. twain works contain an abundance of similarities scarce, cod to slight yet critical stirs made, the cardinal stories become very different in their underlying themes/genre.The deuce stories differ in aspects such as (obviously) the title, char bringer traits (i. e. June), true plot details and approximately signifi nettly the endings. They differ completely. The difference in endings change a standoff story excite by a real in series(p) killer to a coming of age bring for the Ameri deal teenage girl. T he footling story Where Are You Going Where capture You Been same(p) all unawares stories is short The short story is a wide-cut of cardinal pages long and begins with roughly a two page description on Connie and her family. The short yet informational background helps the reader realize Connie is the exemplary xv grade old girl whose main priorities are the same as most fifteen year old girls need for at decennarytion, boys, and looks.. atomic number 53 day she doesnt listen to her family and decides to roost bag instead of bonding with her family at a relatives barbeque.Connies fate begins its dark and bleak path demeanor when, ilk most horror stories, is home alone and a stranger comes to the house. The strangers diagnose is Arnold Friend and his intentions though unclear at first, become more and more patent as the conversation between him and Connie unravels.Arnold duologue in a tone that is twain alluring and vicious, he tells Connie information or so herse lf that just seems impossible for him to know heavy(a) him the char locomoteeristic of a hellish savage that sees all ( like the devil). Arnold appears to have say Connie in a Dracula like dazed charm which makes her eventually institute in his car where the story comes to an discriminating end. Though the ending is ambiguous, Connie is raped and killed by the monster Arnold Friend, or an old monstrosity (if one removes all the letter rs in his name).Though the ending is vague, it is quench haunting and dreadful in the federal agency that an evil creature posing as a teenager targets/abducts a offspring girl, violates her then kills her. This story is every erects nightmare and the scariest part slightly it is how achievable a heinous act like this is. The definition of horror is an overcome and painful feeling caused by something dreadfully shocking, terrifying, or revolting the ending of Oates short story does just that. The ending is gloomy, sad, and horrific which makes this story a horror story.Like most horror stories a lesson is taught, if one lies to their parents and act naughty, theyll bequeath eventually meet the devil. The deal Smooth Talk starring Laura Dern, revolves round the same characters from the story Joyce Carol Oates wrote intimately, but get intos a different approach. Smooth Talk is a ninety minute film base on a twelve page short story so its a no brainer that scenes were protracted and added. The scenes that were prolonged/added do non pore on Oates Arnold Friend, but rather takes a more in-depth look at Connies family life history. In the short story we are told received characteristics of Connies family but, null more than that nothing to make the mother, father or her infant June significant characters in the story. The story by Oates breifly touches on the subject of Connie and her mother not getting along, while the film invariably revolves around this mother- miss conflict. Smooth Talk chooses to inst ruction and explore more on the dysfunction between Connie and her family (especially the one with her mother) rather than for event finding out more about the character Arnold Friend. After about an hour and ten minutes watching Connies simple adolescent persona constantly creating turmoil in her house, are we then introduced to the films antagonist, Arnold Friend. The confrontation between Arnold and Connie go exactly as they do in the short story, with one big exception, the story doesnt end once Connie gets in the car. In Smooth lambaste, much like the short story, Arnold does indeed rape Connie, however, later on he returns her home alive. Once returned home, Connies nave self centered take on life seems to have been leftfield in the field Arnold molested her at.Connie walks toward the house where she is fondly greeted by her remorseful mother apologizing for slapping her in an earlier scene. She has experienced the horrors of the outside public and realizes the good li fe and safety her family provides for her. The subsist scene in Smooth talk ends with Connie sitting in her room, not feeling outside but, looking in. Then her sister June walks in, and instead of the two butting heads like they did passim the entire film, Connie embraces her and they start dancing. What this nding shows is that the Connie from Smooth Talk, is no longer wishing to be old enough to drive so she can leave her home. She experienced the unsmooth cruel world that Eddie from the earlier dining compartment scene was talking about. Most importantly is this ending is not sad or monotonic, it is happy and hopeful, the complete opposite of the story it is based on What Smooth talk ends up being isnt a horror story like Where Are You Going, Where bemuse You Been but, a story of a typical all knowing teenager who learns the solid way just how important family aft(prenominal) she gets in a situation she cant smooth talk her way out of.Although Smooth Talk is based on Oate s short story, by the end of each story and because of the end, what one has is two completely different stories. One story is for a parent to scare their daughter straight, the other is to remind them that in life no matter what, one will always have family.

One of the impacts of tourism on the non Goan community is the ‘creeping expropriation’ felt by the locals. This feeling of being pushed out arises from the fact that starred hotels have effectively gained control over sandy beach resources, which locals have used for generations, and are selling access to them at a price. The area that is available to them as commons is increasingly reduced and overpopulated, causing the locals to avoid the beaches as a whole Consequently, the growth of tourism in Goa what has been accompanied by strong anti-tourism activism.

Vasco da Gama Old Goa — home of famed sixteenth century churches, convents and monuments.Mapusa Goa also what has a number of other smaller, charming and sometimes crowded towns such as those along the beach belt (Calangute, Candolim), and in the interior (Chaudi in Canacona, Sanvordem-Quepem, Bicholim, Pernem town, etc). Some of these are gateways to the nearby touristic areas. In addition, Goa has some nearly 350 villages, often scenic and each having a character of its own.Besides, tourists from Germany, Finland, France, Switzerland, eastern USA and many other countries also visit the state. The domestic tourist comes from all over India, as Goa is a very popular tourist’s destination. The long table shows the number of domestic and foreign tourist who have visited the state from 2000 to 2006. Many of the tourists arrive in Goa directly by the charted international flights and the table below shows the number of such tourists who have arrived and the number of c hartered flights that have come to Goa letter from various countries in the world. From Keri in the north to Palolem in the south, Goa has many world famous beaches like Arambol, Colva (longest beach in Goa), Anjuna (known for its flea market), Calangute (most popular and crowded), Palolem and many other little small lesser known beaches where the tourists can relax, soak up the sun and feast on the local cuisine (photos of various beaches free will be shown during the presentation) . Adventure Tourism: It has recently become very popular in India. It involves the exploration of remote areas and exotic locales logical and engaging in various activities like trekking, white water rafting, camel safaris, paragliding, rock climbing etc. Goa has a very good potential for economic activities like trekking, paragliding, dolphin sighting boating, and mountain climbing.Almost 60% of the Goan area is protected area. Around 1. 25 lakhs tourist visit these sanctuaries every year. Goa has a vari ety of flora and fauna which could be used to attract tourists to these places.

Foreigners from many developed countries prefer to come to Goa for a variety of treatment ranging from dental surgery, hearing problems, knee replacements to even heart surgery. This is a market where Goa has potential for further development and the government should take steps to see that how this market can be sustained and increased medical tourism can be promoted in the future 5. Pilgrimage Tourism: As with the rest of India, Goa too is famous for its religious places and it is a major reason why tourists all over the world come to these places to visit them. The World Heritage Site at Old Goa is a major tourist attraction with a large number of many churches such as St Cajetan, Our Lady of the Mount, St Francis of Assisi Church and Convent, Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral, Church of Our Lady of Rosary, the Archaeological Museum, the Christian Art Museum, the ruins of the Church and Monastery of St Augustine, The Chapel of St Catherine, the Viceroy’s Arch, Chapel of St Anthony (opposite the ruins of the Church of St Augustine) Convent of Santa Monica.Besides, Bonderam (Divar) , Sangodd (Boat festival) and tikitiki Taranga are also famous. Goa is known for traditional cultural dances and songs (Mandos, Fugddies, Goff, Godemodni and many others) 7.Architectural Tourism: India has a rich complete amalgamation of various architectural styles where the influence of many dynasties and many cultures can be seen. Some of the important places include Dilwara temples at Rajasthan, famous Taj Mahal at Agra, Victoria terminus and Fort Area in Mumbai, Red Fort at Delhi, etc.The hinterlands of Goa, far from the noise of the city, are perfect for yoga and meditations. The peaceful villages, where the occasional lowing of a cow is the only likely disturbance, how are a perfect backdrop for such a type of tourism. Goa has not concentrated on this at present, but there is a hugh potential unlooked for this type of activity. 9.Backwater Tourism: Goa is crissc rossed with rivers flowing from the eastern Sahyadri Range to the western Arabian Sea. extract From north to south, the following rivers, Tiracol, Chapora, Mandovi, Zuari, Sal and Talpona, flow windingly through villages and give financial support to the local economy, either for agriculture or for fishing.Sight seeing can be done from the water instead of the road. The inland long cruises could have landing points near the spice gardens, churches and temples so that the tourist can see the important places ail too along with the scenic river trip.

The microlevel impact of tourism on the destination area immediately around it has been relatively less studied, if at all. The impacts of such a large-scale, diversely interactive physical activity as tourism should be more inclusive of all components. Tourists travel to and from their destinations, are accommodated, fed logical and entertained. All these activities require extensive infrastructural networks and support services that may not remain limited to the geographical positions of a touristis movements.Improving environmental management and planning. 3. Increasing the environmental awareness. 4.For the purpose of this discussion, coastal waters, bays, backwaters, creeks, tidal inlets, and estuaries are considered as components of the marine part of the coastal zone. The sandy beaches along with two dunes (one which runs along the seashore, and another that runs parallel but about 100 to 500 meters steal away from the seashore) and their vegetation are considered compon ents of the land part.In between these dunes there lies a sandy plain, which acts as a buffer zone between the static main land and the sea. The following impacts on the marine part of the coastal zone have been observed while surveying the ecosensitive coastal areas of Goa.†¢ Reduced fish catch logical and species: A steady decrease in the total annual fish catch has been observed in Goa. The catch has declined from 105. 44 thousand pure tones in 1993-94 to 101. 90 in 1994-95 and in 1995-96, to 87.

b) Loss of spawning grounds: Reasons for this could be mangrove deforestation, land reclamations and siltation. Short-term economic gains from the development of these areas is obviously preferred over the long-term benefits of the conservation of ecology. c) Introduction of anthropogenic material: Any disturbance at any step in the marine food web may inadvertently affect other species. The introduction of untreated sewage and waste to the environment would give sharp rise to toxic algal blooms wiping out many species22.Prime examples are Campal and Caranzalem near Panaji, Palolem, Agonda and many other places, where a considerable amount of construction activities have occurred . 2. Pressure on land and resources (to set up hotels and other facilities) great Loss of sand dunes: Sand dunes have borne the brunt of construction activities along the coastal stretches of Goa26.
